Being a single parent is one of the world’s hardest positions anyone can be in. There are many harsh statistics regarding single parents. It reflects the way our lives are being lived today. The United States alone has 14 million parents who are single raising 21.6 million children. Most of these single parents are moms. Most single parents are either separated or divorced.
Categories of single parents from statistics
About 83.1% of children custody is awarded to mothers with 16.9% to fathers.
Single moms who are divorced or separated account for 45% while single moms who are not married account for 34%.Widows take up 1.7% with single employed moms at 80%, fulltime working moms at 50% and part-time working moms at 30%. There are still 27% single moms living in poverty.
For single fathers, 58% of them are divorced or separated; 20% have remarried while 21% never married. Less than 1% is widowed and 90% single dads are working with 19% part-time and 72% fulltime.
Struggles of single parents
Single parents encounter a lot of difficulties which they have to struggle on their own, even if they have some form of support. Single parents need to juggle between work and children; house and finances; food and activities; school and tuition. There is no spouse to take half the load. There is little time for self.
These statistics show the growing population of single parents. They reveal the growing problems a single parent household faces in finance, education, work, raising children and self development. The statistics can also reveal the growing mental health of single parents as they go through their struggles alone.
What the statistics are cautioning
There may be a growing number of delinquency issues from single parent homes as the parent is usually not available to cater to the needs of the children. These statistics give insight into potential problems that can besiege the family; hence, our society may be negatively impacted.
Single parents need to adjust to their role as provider and caregiver to ensure a wholesome development of themselves and their children. Time alone and time with their children are required to ensure that statistics on juvenile delinquency, child abuse, alcoholism, drug addiction and the like do not climb.
It is important to have the right support for single parents and their children to avoid the negative impact of single parenting. Support groups and financial aids may play a large and important role in single parents’ new lifestyle but developing the right relationship between parent and child is also very essential to develop a healthy home.
